project ADD

While Mom's getting settled in with her new puppy family member, I'm going to tell you about my project ADD.  I'm supposed to get started on my kitchen at the beginning of 2013.

But, I've already been distracted.

I had to go buy those leather chairs I mentioned, so now I'm scrambling to get my dining room pulled together. Air quotes around dining room. More like dining area.  Or little space where I can fit a table.  Kinda.

Here it is now.  Big wall with too small art.  That's why I gotta change it.  I hate murals.  I even have a whole Pinterest page called Murals (dammit).  But I kinda need something big and mural-like here. And I've had this problem for a while, as proof here.

Currently, my favorite options are the following.  Pay attention, there's a quiz at the end.

  • Grisaille something-or-other.  A bit too traditional for my taste, on a daily basis, I think.

  • Something dark and Rembrandt-ish.

  • Wait with bated breath until my brother paints me something, from a meaningful [to us] photo or memory.
  • Mom and I came across this carving in gold leaf the other day and we gasped.  It's a tryptic and even though it's all gold, it kind of reminds me of the lovely De Gournay fishes in Jeffrey Alan Marks' kitchen.  I could add a little silver leaf over top and some greens and it'd be pretty close.

  • Or blowing up a meaningful photo.  I love this photo of my grandmother on a grey horse. I grew up riding and competing in horse shows and my first horse was a grey named 'Dreamy'.  This makes me smile every time I see it so I'm leaning towards this option.  Because of meaning, love and importantly, availability.  Mom is totally against the idea, since she doesn't like large photographic art so she's been trepidatious to say anything.  I'm wondering if good ole black and white is the best way to go.  Especially with my new slim saddle leather chairs.

All mocked up:

Which version do you like best??  Is large photographic art a bit passe? Is grisaille or Flemish art too traditional?

  1. Dare I suggest a gallery wall? One with moody, Rembrandt-ish art that you like.

  2. Kerry beat me too it. Before I got to your mock-ups I kept thinking, duh gallery wall. Just do it. And then you can sneak in lots of small but meaningful things. But I do like the look of one and two which can also be achieved with a different size of a meaningful photograph

  3. I am on the gallery wall bandwagon here. Though I have to admit, I love the photo of your Grandma's horse, perhaps appropriately framed, it can make a debut in the gallery!

  4. As long as you have some Rembrandt in there, it's smooth sailing. He was my fave in art history :) I do like the suggestion of a gallery wall though as a way to incorporate all of your likes.

  5. First, here's a post to show your dad. Your mom owes me one.

Second, don't be dissin' the murals. I'm really digging them lately. I love the Rembrandt-ish option. It would be a great counterpoint to your Breuer chairs and I would like to see a dark value on the wall to draw your eye back the contrast of the light settee against a dark wall. I'd try to find something that's oriented vertically so it takes up that entire wall.

The large-scale artwork your mom recently showed in the home of Kelly McGuill are murals from Holly Alderman that she just had framed as artwork.

    I'll shut up now.

  6. Love how you presented the mock-ups.....without a doubt the last option...a photo of your grandmother or grandfather on a horse!! Too I love the white, tan and black color palette this would create.

  7. It's hard to fill such a space. I agree with the majority ....a gallery wall.

  8. I do love the first on but I think a gallery wall is the way to go!

  9. I like the second one the most! The first one is my second favorite! Whatever you plan to do on those walls, I am sure it would look fabulous!

  10. I love the wooden painted gold Triptych with the hand carved school of fish...then my mom on a horse as a second choice. ( But I think we should do a painting of it! )
I think that corner needs to be restful and calm, so Im not thinking gallery wall there, especially since you have one right around the corner in the hall!)
    Mom :)

  11. Listen to your mom - I like the triptych too!

  12. I love the fish the best...I only have an "area" too for my dining table's what you do with it that counts :)

  13. Loving the black and white horse options. - Brandy

  14. I'm with Kerry and Julia - gallery wall all the way.

  15. I'm late on the bandwagon but vote gallery wall with Kerry, etc, I would work beautifully in this space.

  16. Since your mom said you have a gallery wall around the corner my vote is for the over-sized b & w photo! LOVE your chairs!!

  17. I think a gallery wall might drive me nuts there..I vote for large and dark in a painting. Something compelling.
