Ceiling WOW

Monochromatic neutral rooms are trending today, but this ceiling ups the anti!

Have you seen this gorgeous ceiling in the dining room reveal by uber talented Jessie D. Miller of The Design Daredevil?

Her ceiling 'how-to' features MDF cut with a C and C router from her design mirrored from the wallpaper in the room.

Neutral doesn't have to be boring!!

Ceiling treatment and my aching neck!

I have had so much fun using our guest room as my designer "test kitchen" for a ceiling treatment.  I swore last time we painted ceilings that I wouldn't do it again, since I seem to be sore down through my spine for weeks.  But, I almost can't help myself! The opportunity presented itself, and this is what I did, no less than 5 different times painting the ceiling.  I did drag it out for 2-3 weeks so I could heal in between sessions, but this can't be good, at my age.

1. ceilings same color as the wall (BM Cumulus Cloud)

 2. taping off a border

 3. painting the outer border a medium gray (BM River Relections)

 4. taping another border and painting the edge the wall color again.

5. painting the center the darkest gray (BM Equestrian Gray)

6. experimenting with tape lines to show possible dark paint lines between colors

7. painting the entire outer border the medium gray ( and realized that the dark in the center looked like the ceiling was falling).

8. then painted the center the wall color, so it's lightest in the center. Do you believe this center color is the same as the wall color? Yep.

I'm either:
 1. a very slow learner, 2. couldn't imagine the exact effect- even when drawn out on paper, 3. a glutton for punishment ,4. fickle or 5. my worst client! I admit to all of the above. I may still do a little more accenting, but I did get my new fixtures up! It is really fun to try things out in my own home so I have more experience in what to suggest for clients.

I may be done with ceiling painting for a while....maybe!

Ceiling love

We adore ceiling treatments over here at Powell Brower Interiors. Whether it's wallpapered grasscloth:

       1

painted or papered stripes:

         2

a soothing hue of paint:

       3

Melanie Turner's amazing striped bedroom ceiling:

or this metallic gold or silver leaf.

Whether matte or glossy, it can be most affective in solidifying the color scheme

or adding an element of  surprise in a room.  It's  that "je ne sais quoi" ('I don't know what'), the designer's touch, a visual statement of bringing the ceiling down,  making it heighten, or making it cozy. Bethany's master bedroom was a fun treatment and added depth and dimension to the space.

I always say rugs are 'pictures for floors' so ceiling treatments must be like jewelry ('room candy') or a beautiful hat or beautifully coiffed hair.  What do you think? Have you painted your ceiling lately? I say let's do it!

[Ceiling] Obsessed Much?

Hiya Folks!

I'm interrupting my regularly scheduled vacation to bring you a guest post update (and because I miss you all).   I'm over at The Mustard Ceiling today, paying homage to our friend Elizabeth and her blog - talking about the art of incorporating the ceiling into the room design.

If you haven't guessed by now, ceilings are kinda our thing.  We're just really into them, whether we're doing canopies on our current project, or painting them dark colors or revelling in some wallpaper goodness; we love to include the ceiling in a design plan. Kinda like the wonderful ceiling at our favorite Charlottesville haunt, And George:

Pop on by The Mustard Ceiling to see the obsession unravel.
