One Room Challenge - Where are They Now

We've done quite a few of these challenges, and as I was telling my friend last night, I don't know if I'd be this far redoing the rooms in my home if it weren't for the ORC. Thank you Linda at Calling it Home! I haven't changed any of my rooms (yet) but I know Bethany is always tweaking her master bedroom. Here is where we are today.

We participated in the One Room Challenge featuring Bethany's master bedroom in August 2012.

A year and a half later, she's always tweaking, planning and changing her MBR 2.0 . She quickly tired of the busy pattern and upholstered a new headboard, is planning for new drapes in a neutral pattern and painted over the 'drop ceiling' illusion on the walls. Here it is today:

In March 2013, I joined another ORC to redo my laundry room. I was so pleased that my husband made all the cabinetry and Bethany and I had a ball doing the nailhead trim.

My current mission is my guest room makeover so stay tuned! The 'frequent redecorators' are at it again!

3rd challenge down..THE REVEAL

This it it...D day.. the finale.. 6 weeks of gettin' it done! I love these challenges since it forces you to finish a room in your own home. Thank you again Linda from Calling It Home for launching this challenge! I can't tell you how much I love these challenges!
My laundry room went from this on February 6th:

Notice the unsightly hoses behind the washer are disguised! Finally!

The attached closet got a little makeover and organization plus a custom dog bed for Gibbs!

It's been a great project and so fulfilling. I am so happy with the results and will get it professionally photographed later. Thank you all for following along and I can't wait to see my other girls and their final reveals. One more time:

One Room Challenge Week 6- The Final Push!

Today I want to share with you my laundry room wall treatment for the ORC. You can check back on the 'before' pictures and weekly progress here. This is our last progress post before the FINAL REVEAL MARCH 20th! Bethany and I had alot of fun creating this upholstery treatment on my laundry room walls.

We used 1" jute tape that I bought from Etsy and 3/4" antique brass nail heads that I bought from KitKraft Inc. I had the hardest time estimating how many I would need, so I ended up ordering multiple times, and may I say, both of these shops have excellent customer service! These studs were a bit pricey ($20 for 50) since I needed 200, but the impact is so worth it. I'm glad I didn't use smaller ones.

We made a spacing template so we could keep the distance between the nailheads consistent.

It installed so easily and really took only 2 hours total for the laundry room. I debated about glueing the tape, but ended up not doing that-it wasn't necessary. We decided not to cut corners and line the ceiling as well, and it made ALL the difference.

I love it, do you? I'm making the window treatment now, then all that's left is styling!

bed KNOBs and broomsticks...

Remember that Disney movie? Bethany loved it as a wee tot. This made me laugh just thinking of it, but here's a glimpse if you want to re-live it for a moment.

I am loving searching for knobs and hardware for my new laundry room cabinets for the ORC.

Some of my cabinets are white, and some of my cabinets are stained 'pecan'. I have (ancient)gold door knobs, a new silver sink faucet, a new antique brass light fixture... so what do I go with?

I told you I was my own worst client last week... I love it all!

ORC Update Week 3

The major addition this week was the hanging of the upper cabinets! So exciting. I debated about painting the uppers white, but the quality of these handmade cabinets is really nice, so I wanted to honor the integrity of the material and try staining it first. (I can always paint it later, but it's hard to paint it then go back to raw wood and stain.) These cabinets weigh a ton, since they are solid 3/4" furniture grade white birch.

I stained them with Varathane's Golden Pecan. I love how they repeat the color in the wooden counter top. Everything in the room is gray and white, it's kind of nice to add warmth.

This double wide cabinet took three men to hang it--it was so heavy. Next dilemma is how to hide the ugly hoses and knobs behind the washer, but we're getting creative so wait and see!

I had the sink and a new faucet installed, after returning the white faucet...just didn't look right.

Did you check out our post on being my worst client yesterday? I finally decided on a fabric and ordered it! It was none of the choices I posted about...naturally. Hope I like it when it comes.

Next job is to finish the base cabinet next, i.e. hang doors, install and secure the hamper, polyurethane the inside of the hamper to seal it, mount hardware... see you next Wednesday or hopefully sooner!

Week 2 One Room Challenge Update

This week was the fun one, where an application of color made this room come alive! I absolutely love the way this Benjamin Moore's Gunmetal( 1602) color looks with the white trim. I had to paint before the cabinets go up, so it took 2 coats for best coverage.

Next I painted the base cabinet white. Since it was raw wood, I used an oil primer first, then semi gloss white for the exterior.

( yes, that is green astro turf in my husband's man cave. He was a high school football coach for 40 years.)

This is the hamper piece that will go in the base cabinet, which I am ecstatic about!

Then we had a test run of the base cabinet install to see how the sink is going to look! I absolutely love this self rimming acrylic sink ( 25" x 22" x 13" deep).

It has a washboard side to it and my Shih Tzu fits in it. My golden retriever is going to have to go in the bathtub!

SNAG...the washing machine has been leaking on the floor, so we had a repairman in to fix it and found out we bought it in 1996. No thank you on a $300.00 repair! So we had to purchase a new machine. I bought a Speed Queen for $700.00. I took the advice of my repairman who said all those fancy front loaders and computer panels have lots of expensive repair problems, and I do alot of heavy washing (i.e. horse blankets) so I'm happy to go with a heavy duty tried and true commercial brand.)

The center white faucet I ordered online was too clunky and massive, so I returned it in favor of a chrome single faucet. I had the plumber in to connect the sink and faucet and it is fully operational! My husband needs to finish the base cabinet ( install face frame, mount the doors, secure the hamper on the back wall with a chain so it doesn't fall forward too far).

Next is to install the upper cabinets and figure out the window treatment, install a new light fixture and do a custom treatment on the walls...oh, and the fun part: hardware, accessories and staging.I need to paint and organize the closet in there as well. Can't wait!
