in / out

I have loved reading your posts on the trends that washed away with 2013. I was happy to see things like chevron pillows and monogrammed-everything fade.

I started thinking about the trends I'm done with

1. Brass for the sake of brass.  I covet an aged brass faucet just like the rest of yous so I hate to make such a broad statement, but enough of the adding more brass and MCM furniture just because.

2.  All white minimalist nurseries.

3.  Industrial things - lightbulbs, pipes or both.

4.  Cutesy typography. Word-art on walls, gallery walls full of word-art and cutesy little wreath-thingies included. Sorry Glitter Guide.

5.  Black and white abstracts. Sure, I'll see one I like here and there.  But for the most part, let's redirect the talent elsewhere, shall we?

6.  White subway tile, halfway up, with no uppers in a kitchen.  I'm bored.

7. I wish I could say this last one in a teensy tiny voice so my mother doesn't club me to death when I go over to her house tonight, but .... Blue and White collections.  I'm done seeing it.  Mom has over 100 pieces of it in her home. I grew to love it. I bought it. I subscribed to it.  But I've seen too much. Since it's one of those timeless things (oxymoron?) I'll just mentally shelf it for a few years and then I'm sure I'll like it again.

Trends I could take or leave:

Benis and wedding blankets
Flatweave kilims and indigo/neon pink pillows
Gatsby-esque Deco
Painted furniture
Black and white with pops of saddle leather (nope, nevermind, still love it)
Kelly green and gray
poufs...

Hopefully we'll see a tad less of this shiz in 2014 but what would blogging be without all the lofty ideas, DIYs and bloggy decor?  While some of it is mind numbing (and over-saturation truly is the killer of all buzzes) it's the truly good ones that make up for all the rest.  I'm very thankful to be part of this creative world and all there is in it. And if you are still rocking the chevron pillows, then keep doing you. I'm just speaking my own truth, it doesn't have to be yours.

  1. Preach, Sister!

    *in a tiny voice*

I'm planning white subway tile with no uppers in my kitchen reno, though the tile is crunchy recycled stuff and will be taken up to the ceiling.

  2. This is a really insightful list. I'm about to have brass fixtures installed in my bath but I still love it. However, I think the photo you picked to illustrate too much of it was great. I'm over all things Moroccan - especially the wedding blankets.

  3. *teeny tiny voice* I'm over blue & white too……..except for Nancy's. Hers rocks!!!!!!!!! How about black & white striped ribbon at Christmas? I bought tons of it last year to use this past Christmas, and then all of a sudden it was everywhere and took all the fun out of it. And the black & white Ikea Lappljung Ruta pillow I have, along with the rest of the world? Wait I still love that one. Love your list, it totally made me giggle!!

  4. Great post! I agree with you as well. Lately I find myself attracted to rooms that are prettier and more colorful. Here's to the next trends!

  5. Lol, I love me some chevron, but I agree with all the others on your list!

  6. LOL! I agree with most of these. Too much typography, too much brass, too much exposed pipe. I love the blue and white but do not have a single piece of my own on display. I went through that in the 90s. Looking forward to some new trends in 2014.

  7. GASP no blue and white??! ha ha I have never understood it but I know I am in the minority. That's the beauty, right? I agree with all of yours except the industrial- I will forever love those lights :)

  8. Also in a teeny tiny voice, I have a similar post brewing. Great points! Makes me sad that so many trends are overdone.

  9. I hate word art too! I mean really hate it but not enough to put up a sign in my kitchen saying so.

  10. I've learned if I like a trend at all to jump on board early because soon enough everyone will have it and I'll be so over it! Fun post Bethany!

  11. Hmmm, I think the bigger question might be; who do we decorate for? If it is ourselves, who cares what others think? I love my blue and white and will be adding more to it very soon. That picture from AD is lovely, and now I want a bamboo etagere exactly like that one.

    1. That's probably a better point. When you do it just to be on trend, it's mind numbing. When you do what you love, then it feels good all the way around.

  12. Love hearing your thoughts Bethany, and I am in complete agreement with you on a few trends, but especially the way the saturation of looks on the web can be a buzz kill. Linda's point is dead on too so in the end, be true to yourself, love what you buy and your home will always be current without being trendy (hopefully!)

  13. Whew! I only have one thing on your list :) {whispers}...blue and white. I know but if its wrong I don't want to be right :) and hey, if you can sneak any of your mom's stuff out of her house email me for my shipping address. I promise i'll find it a good home...in my dining room and kitchen :)

    have a great weekend!

  14. I'm with Linda - decorate for yourself and you'll be happy, whether or not your choices are currently "on trend". Great post!

  15. Amen sister! I would also add bright pink to the list. Perhaps smeary DIY art also.

  16. I think I'm loving everything on your list for the RIGHT reasons. More like Linda's comment. I'm loving them because they're classic and old and I've had enough of liking what I'm supposed to like. Except the black and white and topography as art. I'm with you on that one.

I will defend the all-white nurseries. Once you bring that baby home and all of their stuff is exploding from your every surface you will have enough color to ease your appetite for less boring. Trust me when I say even the most tidy of nurseries is still overflowing with stuff once baby is born. Keeping a soft space to NOT stimulate is important for those little babes.

  18. As long as you follow your gut and go with what you like, you will never be wrong.

  19. I never understood the white minimalist nurseries... even just from a practical "how am I going to get spit-up breast milk out of this rug" point of view...
I'm over chevron, too. But not blue & white... I'm in it too deep. :)

  20. Your a brave soul Bethany, I respect it all and agree with some, but the blue and white thing is just starting for me so I know you understand why I'm still a sucker for it hehehe! have a great weekend!

  21. I agree with Linda and Kris if you truly love something and not just because everyone else has it then I say go for it.Like I love my vintage moroccan brass table its 1970s..I totally know its not everyones taste but I cant help it I love it. Great Post Bethany!!

  22. GREAT post ;-) and I have to agree with everything you're done with, except for the blue and white (don't own it but love looking at it). I'm not a trend girl at all, which often leaves me out of the crowd, but I like my own drum, so to speak. Where trendy colors exist in my home, it's pure coincidence because I've always loved and used the colors I have, in one shade or another. And the brass thing? Yup. I was out when nickel was in. Like nickel a lot, but antique brass, and the occasional polished brass candlesticks never left me. Sorry for the babel -- can you tell your post struck a chord, lol?

  23. Spot on, Bethany, dear!

I'm going to add a subset to your typography entry ... numbering things. Numbers running up stair risers, numbers on dresser drawers, numbers on the backs of chairs ... enough already!! My (least) favorite was a bistro set that a blogger proudly reworked, stenciling "No. 1" and "No. 2" on the seats of the chairs. I almost spit my coffee onto my monitor when I saw that.

  24. You know I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I'm really tired of seeing all the chinoiserie elements everywhere. I have loved it and used it forever and I will continue to do so but it hurts my heart a little to see it being so over played. : (

  25. Great list!! I am also over chevron and most Lucite furniture. Quatrefoil is dangerously close to being as overdone as chevron... And I'm probably never going to get on board with radiant orchid, except in a throw pillow!

  26. Great list...I am with you on the chevron pillows. I bet radiant orchid will be on a lot of peoples lists next year as well!

  27. Oh Bethany ... You know I will NEVER diss my chevron!! Although ... I don't have any pillows in it!! Love the post and it is fun to see what we all stand by for years and then what comes in and out of our homes in a flash!! xo

  28. Where is the BURLAP? I do love my antique blue and white Japanese porcelain collection and will never give it up.
