Formal Dining Room?

This is a room in my home that I rarely use, and it's not that formal.  At least it stays clean and presentable. I'm seeing more and more the trend towards a more formal kitchen with eat-in area.

Now this is formal.  How often is a room like this really used?

1
Is this a waste of space?

I might prefer something like this myself.

But I think in my next house I'll just make my kitchen and dining room one large more formal area and use my 'good' silver and my fine china more often!

Do you use your formal dining room often? Do you think they're going out of style?

  1. When I made over my dining room, I added bookcases, a round center table and a few wing back chairs with the idea that it would be a more informal space where I would hang out, drink coffee and read the newspaper. Despite its new charm--its been pinned thousands of times--I still don't use it. Maybe twice a year. So I'm planning my kitchen with a center "island" table and comfy chairs to replace the function of the dining room. (Your #4 photo is one of my favorites.) The dining room will become a den. And the living room where I hang out everyday will become a little more formal.

  2. Funny, I don't use my 'good silver' often, but it is totally in vogue now. It is gold! For a while, I was sorry that I registered for it, but you know how it goes, if you hold on to it long enough....yeah that's what gets us all into trouble.

  3. we use ours everyday, but then again, we don't have an eat-in kitchen. I do like a little 'relaxed' formality.

  4. I love the idea of a formal dining room, but realistically the one at my parent's house doesn't get used too often. Still, that room reminds me of special times and holidays with family and loved ones. I think my dream house will have a jewel box of a formal dining room!

  5. There is something I absolutely love about a formal dinning room. But I'm with A Perfect Gray, I lean toward a more relaxed formality.

  6. I bought my current apartment FOR the dining room! it's my only table so I eat most meals there, pay my bills on it, stack my new magazines & books and read them there with a pot of tea on saturdays -it's my 'hangout' zone!

  8. That Bobby Macalpine room. I love everything about it! We don't really have a dining room, it is more of a "nook" with a farm table. We used to sit at it every single night. As Erin has left for college and Callie on her heels it is seeing less use. Nothing makes me happier than the six of us being together around that table for dinner laughing and sharing our day. Good Silver. Use it every single day and it even gets mixed in with the cheap stuff on occasion!! xo

  9. We have a casual formal dining room, and it gets used a lot! When we don't entertain it ends up being my office, not always a pretty sight!

  10. I use my dining room two or three times a year to eat in with guests or on holidays. I use a lot to stack up stuff temporarily (weeks on end) that I don't have an immediate spot for.

  11. I turned the dining room in our current house into a living room/study. In our new house, the dining room is at one end of the kitchen and the "eat-in nook" is at the other. I think I will use the latter as a small keeping room.

  12. I need a formal dining room....its not too formal....but I love having my dinner parties...and gathering my friends and cooking for them. I wouldn't trade it out for more room somewhere else!

  13. We have a small eating area in the kitchen (10 x 10) I put my desk, a large table MC made out of a 30" x 80" door, with a wing back chair, for my "office". He also built in a wall of shelving. The dining room is part of our "open" great room/foyer/dining room/kitchen. We use it for all our meals, dinner parties and when having large parties ...the buffet table!

  14. I have one and still use it for holidays and special occassions, but I agree with you on using the kitchen eat-in area for more of this function too, hence, I'm hoping my new kitchen eat-in will fit this bill. I love your dinaing room Nancy- eclectically beautiful! You know how to mix your patterns and colors very well!

  16. When we moved in almost 30 years ago, I turned the family room adjacent to the kitchen into a dining room with fireplace. In our remodel, I'm turning the dining room into a a library with a table for dining and annexed part of the living room to make the back of the house one 53' open space. I gave away my large table that seated 10. In the new world order, I will no longer do the big holiday meals and six people for dinner will the maximum unless we have a buffet. The new table will be large enough for reading/research and four guests. The new space will be a working pantry/morning room. My "good stuff" has been boxed up for several years. Can't wait until all is done and I can use them.

  17. I'm about to use my formal dr more often as my dollhouse kitchen is teeny tiny and seats 3 comfortably. I do like formal ish dining room and I hope they never go away. Even though they're not used frequently, it sure feels special to have a big gathering in there at holidays and parties!

  18. We use our formal fairly regularly when we entertain, and for the family occasionally. That table is also a drop spot and where I set up my sewing machine when it's out. I agree with you, it would be nice to have one big space, but it's fun to have two different tables too!

  19. Hello, Nancy! Thanks for visiting my blog! I'm in Arlington, so we are practically neighbors, depending on the traffic that is. :) The husband and I have a one bedroom apartment, so there is no formal dining room for us, but I have to admit that I have dreams of one someday. I wanted wedding china because I have hopes of hosting our families for Christmas and Thanksgiving. I just need to learn how to cook now!

  22. I actually like the idea of a formal dining room. If I could I have my dream, I would have a large kitchen that could hold a very long farmhouse type table and then have a separate dining for more formal events....and to decorate of course. 23. I enjoy picture 4 a lot in this feature. I love the green/gray accents with hardwood floors and it provides a more relaxed dining experience! I'd prefer informality to formality any day just to avoid the repetition that's usually associated with formal dining.
