I often evaluate a room and it's function and aesthetic by making sure there is something visual and or functional in every quadrant of a room. An important function of each "quarter" is
lighting. There should be adequate lighting in all four sectors, be it overhead, task, or ambient light.
This room, by one of my favorite designers
S. Russell Groves, is a great example of ample lighting. There is literally a lamp in each quadrant plus an overhead fixture. Overhead lighting is certainly "back" in fashion, and not only adds more lumens to a room but is also a key focal point, a sculptural quality on the ceiling which is often a blank forgotten space. Here is the other side of Groves room design:
I hope this tip helps you to analyze your lighting needs in your space. Is there adequate lighting in each quarter of your room?
I never have enough light. Thanks for the boost.

Great post and that room is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou always have the best tips!! Lighting is so important. It can make or break a room. That first image is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! I so agree, Nancy! I love lamps so I tend to have an overabundance of them. The room in the picture is my idea of perfection! So gorgeous, comfortable, beautiful, layout is ideal, lots of seating, etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. I often see rooms with just one or two lamps. How do they see at night?!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice and inspiration photos! Have a great day, cute friend!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips. Looking at some rooms in mags it's amazing the lack of lamps and lighting! I imagine overhead lighting is there but edited out of the picture. Your example is perfect. It's not always easy to accomplish due to existing furniture that can not be changed and the room's size and features.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip Nancy! Now I have to think about my living room, have to make sure I have adequate lighting everywhere! Love this room- what I want my house to be - have to pin this. Thanks!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this concept of quadrants - very helpful!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh - I love lighting so I have ample lighting in most of my spaces. I'm always trying to find a way to sneak in another lamp. Smart post, Nancy!
ReplyDeleteLighting is KEY!! I always like overhead lighting available, but prefer the low light of lamps ... all over the room!! Love the breakdown you share! xo
