workin on a crib

I think by now you might be sick of me talking about how I've been dying to do a nursery.  Well, the end is in sight for you loyal readers because we finally have a nursery client!!!  This sweet lady came to us wanting a design plan to copy this super chic nursery done by Estee Stanley.

Isn't it lovely?

The crib in this picture is a Sparrow Crib and they are the rage right now.  But they are also over $700 a pop which is a total bummer because our client can only spend $1000 total on this nursery.

So we found a gray look-alike at Ikea for $120!  How great is that?!  Then it hit me.  Do people buy cribs from Ikea?  Is their signature softwood and buyer-assembled furniture a hazard? Or is it not much different from the old wooden bassnettes of yesteryear?  What say you?  She's a new momma and I'm not a momma, so we need some advice!

Our client was able to find the extra space in their small home by converting their old office into the nursery.  As such, they have fantastic french doors already in place and that was the key factor in gelling with the Estee Stanley nursery as their inspiration.  Instead of trying to add wood panels and/or beams to the ceiling (btw she's 7 months pregnant and running out of time), we suggested painting the ceiling dark to mimic the look, along with the french doors.  We are going to overdye one of her old Persian rugs (like we did here) to cut down on costs, but we have a runner-up waiting in the wings in case that goes poorly. There isn't much room for a hefty ottoman so we opted for a chic garden stool.  We stuck to the budget as best we could. Here's the run down.

Ikea Pillows (disco.)

$1060 was the grand total for this room.  Let's just pray this rug turns out!  We can't wait to help her ready for this baby.

  1. the room looks amazing! When I was pregnant we went to one of those police officer things were they check out your car seat to make sure it is safe. I think I was 8 months pregnant at the time and he said something that stuff. Even the cheap car seats have to follow the same rules as the expensive brands? So I am sure it applies for cribs too! :)

  6. Oh this is so pretty! I saw the cribs at Ikea but didn't do any research on them. You can do an e-design for me if you want ;) ! Planning a nursery is SO much fun!

  8. Re: a crib, honestly I don't think even the more expensive ones are all that well made sometimes (my son shook ours to death - I used the same one for both my kids and he was second so maybe it was more than the crib could take). So I can't imagine the IKEA version is any worse. And I love the style of it - great find. You did an amazing job mimicking the inspiration room. I adore the overdyed rug. My only suggestion would be to find a club chair that is also a rocker because I think that's key in a nursery. My son loved his rocker. I think the IKEA chair is great visually, but there are versions out there somewhere that look the same but rock as well.

  9. Why not the IKEA crib? Can't imagine they'd be able to sell it if it was unsafe. It's got good lines and is within budget. Splurge on a big boy/girl bed later that will take them through childhood. Love what you came up with here and hope you'll share the rug outcome!

  10. Looks great. I want to hear more about this dyed rug. Have you done a post on it I missed? I think an IKEA crib would be fine. They have to meet the safety standards. I would recommend a cool looking rocker/glider instead of chair. A mom can't live without one....at least I couldn't. West Elm and Pottery Barn have good options. - Brandy

  17. I was planning on buying an ikea crib for Tagg but they all went on recall in december and didn't return until February so my January deadline didn't work. I've seen them in person since then and was really impressed. I ended up with the modline from Walmart and was really impressed with the quality but it was twice the ikea crib. Wells' crib was more expensive and from a baby store and the quality was the exact same as all three. To be honest, I'm surprised they all aren't a little more sturdy. Pretty sure you need to look at Bratt for that kind of quality. Ikea furniture is what it is. Some people think it's crap but I love it for it's function and how good it looks. This is something that only needs to last two years of use. Then maybe another two at some point for a second child. It's not an heirloom they will store in the attic, but who cares, frees up storage space! I had two babies in 17 months so nurseries are my jam. Please don't hesitate to ask anymore questions about what you need v. what is crap you will never want in there anyway!

  18. Ok, so I was at Ikea today and scoped out this crib for you! The floor model was very sturdy but it was a lot smaller than most cribs. Smaller as in low to the ground. The rails didn't go past my hips. Would be a lot easier to lay a baby down than most cribs! Overall, I would say it's a go! Though I'm no mom, I am a nanny:)

  19. We have an Ikea crib and it's been great. 2.5 years and going strong. We have a simple white one and love it!
