My settee is a little too low for my table, so when you sit down, you sink too low and really have to lean on the table top to eat. I was thinking I could add some antique casters to the front to raise it up. Have you had an experience with that?
Secondly, the glass table top on my round table ends up being a 'support', so it tips off of the base when you apply too much pressure on it. OY. Was thinking I'd try to install large suction cups on the base, pointed up, and see if the glass table top would be any more stable once they attach to it. Anyone had any experience with THAT?
My vision is this set-up.
Suggestions on securing my glass table top to the base and raising the settee height very very WELCOME!

Not sure about the glass, but how about adding casters to the legs of the settee? You could also add cups to the bottom to dress it all up.

Shoot, that's a tough one. Such a great table. Is the glass to big for it? Casters might be a great idea for the settee. Let us know if you figure out a solution.
ReplyDeletewow, I am doing the exact same project right now. I smushed together my two slipper chairs that I hate to make a settee and they are still too low. Thinking of adding casters. Maybe we can go crazy and try this together :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the casters for your settee. Or have you looked into changing out the legs?

I'm going to be attempting casters this weekend, if I can get the hubs to help me. I'll try it if you try it.
ReplyDeleteYou're ON! At everyone's suggestion, I just ordered some! I actually ordered new legs WITH casters on them, so we'll see!
DeleteI am adding casters to a coffee table, HOPEFULLY this weekend! Strength in numbers?!
DeleteI was going suggest what everyone else has already said...casters on the settee. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI also think casters are you best bet, but that will only give you an inch or two. Could you add a loose boxy cushion on top of the current tight one when you re-do? Maybe something like this?

Good luck, I have a settee just like yours that I'm planning to put in my kitchen also. I haven't checked it at the table, though. I bet I have the same problem!
Sounds like you're on it. Are the new legs with casters that you ordered taller? I've been dying to put a settee with my table forever but was worried about the same thing (seat height being too low). Re: the glass, I would check with your local glass person and see what they suggest. Surely, they've tackled this issue before. I swear decorating is more about problem-solving than anything else! Good luck . . . I know it will look great when all is said and done!
ReplyDeleteBethany, My grandparents put casters on everything. EVERYTHING! Then they came to my house and started putting casters on my stuff. It drove me crazy on my hardwood floors. I would suggest a locking caster or putting it on those rubber cups, otherwise to may take a ride across the room on your settee one day. Sorry to rain on your parade.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem with a wing back chair that looks ideal at our round glass top 60" table. I love the fact that it allows for 5 chairs ....like that uneven number look! But it sat too low! I might put it back someday, I do change things around here very often. When I do, I will look into casters. That just might work, especially since the flooring is a twist broadloom!
ReplyDeleteKerry's idea of a locking caster sounds perfect. Your settee is fantastic. I'm looking for one for my entrance hall.
ReplyDeleteI think casters would work, but don't do like me and spend more than another settee would cost! It may work better in another area of your home. I love the way it looks.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday, Behtany.

I DID it! You got me moving the chairs.....I put my wing back chair back in the dining room. I'll have MC add casters. The table and room looks so much better with the 5 chairs, and it needed the upholstered chair to soften the space.
ReplyDeleteThanks....
Love the settee! Cute cute!
ReplyDeleteThe only way to do this would be to change the legs of your settee I think. As for the table, unless you glue the glass on the table, which I don't advise since, if you put too much pressure on one end, may end up breaking it all together, I suggest you get a much thicker glass to offset it tilting too much. It may still tilt, but not too much. Good luck! :-)
ReplyDeleteHey girls! Just add a nice cushion like Jennifer at D&T suggested. I am seeing more and more cushions on settees and chairs where the cushion is at the same height as the arms ... don't let that deter you!! You could also do foam with batting rather than all down which will keep its shape and better support!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI hate it when things don't work out as well in person as they did in your head! I think you've gotten some great ideas in your comments already - and if it's any consolation, I have a glass topped coffee table that tips whenever my kids try to prop their feet on it! Good luck - it's a great concept and you have some wonderful pieces to work with!

What about having a cushion seat made to raise you up a bit. I know the arms aren't too high so you'd have to be careful not to go too thick. Maybe that combined with casters would do the trick. Dang it, I hate when that happens.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I cobbled together a dining room table from some thrifting finds some time ago and had the same issue -- the round table top tipping. If you ever find a fix, let me know! I just ended up going back to our drop leaf rectangular table.
ReplyDeleteEager to see if the casters solve your problem!
Camille
Love the settee! It's quite impressive.
