copycat design project

We recently had [possibly the most] interesting inquiry yet!  A prospective client reached out to us for help recreating a sitting room off of her kitchen.  The fun part? She wanted three different 'prototypes' in the style of her favorite three designers!  What fun we had creating these vignettes for her, it was a really cool exercise to think outside of our own boxes.  And some of these designers are our personal role models, as well, so we really enjoyed trying to emulate their style.

Can you guess the famous designer "look" in each one?

Can you guess which one she went with?

Hint hint, he has his own TV show!

workin on a crib

I think by now you might be sick of me talking about how I've been dying to do a nursery.  Well, the end is in sight for you loyal readers because we finally have a nursery client!!!  This sweet lady came to us wanting a design plan to copy this super chic nursery done by Estee Stanley.

Isn't it lovely?

The crib in this picture is a Sparrow Crib and they are the rage right now.  But they are also over $700 a pop which is a total bummer because our client can only spend $1000 total on this nursery.

So we found a gray look-alike at Ikea for $120!  How great is that?!  Then it hit me.  Do people buy cribs from Ikea?  Is their signature softwood and buyer-assembled furniture a hazard? Or is it not much different from the old wooden bassnettes of yesteryear?  What say you?  She's a new momma and I'm not a momma, so we need some advice!

Our client was able to find the extra space in their small home by converting their old office into the nursery.  As such, they have fantastic french doors already in place and that was the key factor in gelling with the Estee Stanley nursery as their inspiration.  Instead of trying to add wood panels and/or beams to the ceiling (btw she's 7 months pregnant and running out of time), we suggested painting the ceiling dark to mimic the look, along with the french doors.  We are going to overdye one of her old Persian rugs (like we did here) to cut down on costs, but we have a runner-up waiting in the wings in case that goes poorly. There isn't much room for a hefty ottoman so we opted for a chic garden stool.  We stuck to the budget as best we could. Here's the run down.

Ikea Pillows (disco.)

$1060 was the grand total for this room.  Let's just pray this rug turns out!  We can't wait to help her ready for this baby.

a family family room

My aunt has GREAT taste.  I love it as much as I love my Mom's and Grandmother's.  And since I spent a lot of time with my aunt growing up, I feel super connected to her sense of style. So when she asked Mom and I to weigh in on some updates around her house, we jumped at the chance.

She has major pieces.  And when I say major, I mean the kind where she's actually collected things from all of her many many travels and spent some serious money on art and furniture over the years.  The sad part is, from this picture, her room looks dated and dingy.

Because she has some really great things she only needed little tweaks here and there.  Like these mirrors we suggested for her alcoves in the family room.  She ponders doing built-ins one day, but these mirrors would do the trick in the meantime!
The room already has both heavy and rich finishes : Simon Pierce lamps, authentic Oriental rug, creamy leather furniture, and a bent glass coffee table.  All we wanted to do is play those up with simple additions like pattern, texture and reflection.

We recommended custom drapery in a fretwork pattern that plays nicely with her other Chinois accents. We also recommended painting the entire room a warm white and accentuating the hearth by painting it dark charcoal like its slate top. A console would ease your visual transition into the sunken living room by making the sofa placement look more purposeful.

Get ready for a serious gear shift.  She also has a basement that was just finished into a gameroom for her grandchildren.  There is a separate entrance at the back of the house in her laundry room and it's been untouched for years.  To add a little fun and excitement, we did another ombre treatment!

Now to cozy up those cinderblock walls a bit!

girl power

We were recently contacted by a new client who wanted some suggestions for her apartment.

Her dilemma was how to make her apartment jazzed up with finishes and furnishings so she didn't have to paint the walls.  She loves color and stripes and wanted to see if we could do two different looks - one with a bit more of a boho edge and the other more girly.  Our client is single and at the point in her life/career that she's ready to make some investments in better pieces, but we did need to incorporate the near-white sofa and slipper chairs that she already has.

Here's what we suggested:

She asked us to put the designs up and ask you, dear readers, what you prefer. She likes both and can't decide!

Which do YOU like?
