Whats new from Black Crow Studios

While in High Point, NC last month I had the pleasure of catching up with Tracy Hiner, the artist behind Black Crow Studios, who told me about her latest projects.

I love Tracy's work.  We often see it at CR Laine during market, and I have purchased some of her prints, and can't wait to use her wallpaper line in our design business.

Her latest series is titled "Caliber" and involves immersing paint in large bodies of water and photographing the completely spontaneous affect that happens.  Tracy described the process as using large aquariums filled with water and literally dumping water based paint into the water for random and unpredictable affects.  At first I didn't know what the objects were amidst the clouds of paint.

In this Caliber series, she has taken dismantled gun and weapon parts that she secured from police departments who have taken these weapons from arrested criminals, and rendered them unusable, never to resurface again.  I love that she is making a statement about keeping these guns off the streets, and not putting them 'en totale', but using parts so that it remains an abstract quality in her work.  I think this is a brilliant artistic move, and quite unique.

So you know how Mom loves her museum tours?  God love her and my brother, but I just can't...

When we were staying at my in-laws mountain cabin in Asheville, NC, they volunteered to take us to the Biltmore and my always-on-Army-time F.I.L. took us through the 1 bazillion square foot masterpiece at warp speed.

Speaking of what I like, when it comes to art, I know what I like and what I don't like.  But I don't know much else.  I minored in Fine Art in college and pretending to throw paint around on the canvas, but I can't say I came away with a real art history appreciation.

Here's what I'm loving though:

My friend says I like functional art.  I suppose that's the best way to put it.  I usually look at it from a decorating point-of-view, stuff that would look great in a room like these:

I'm pretty much dying over this Pit portrait in Erika's Coastal Living decor!  If I didn't have to exercise so much restraint, I'd have portraits of Wilma Sauce everywhere.

Utter Apartment-decor Envy

I saw this on a great blog called the zhush that led me to the  New York Social Diary and this  recently sold apartment of Cathy Triant Buxton, in NYC.  


This is now one of my favorite  foyers:

"In the foyer a 1961 abstract painting by a German artist hangs above a pair of French Bergère chairs. The pillow fabric is from Clarence House. The mirrored side table is from Maison 24 in Bridge Hampton."    I barely have a foyer in my home....not really large enough for a chair, but I love this rug, the ART, the mirrored table, the orange accents! OMG                                                     Here is Ms. Buxton's living room:        and another Living room space--LOVE THE FLOW, and the light!

The abstract art is so well chosen and displayed, making every room exciting. I love these contemporary rugs as well. Now I'm inspired to make some more changes in MY home (again)!
