It's been a while since we had a giveaway here at Powell Brower at home so we'd like to help you welcome spring with some sparkle and shine.  We have one large, beautifully made, polished nickel and glass Hurricane Sconce by Wilson to giveaway to one lucky winner.   This is definitely a statement piece and will dress up any area of your home! 

In my dining room I have two of these sconces that I bought from One King's Lane a while back.  These have a mirror backing, but the giveaway sconce is open to the wall color in the back, or you can put a paint color on the backing.  It is glamourous and huge!

Art at Uncommon Goods and a GIVEAWAY!

I just got my copy of the new book: Young House Love.  Sherry and John Petersik's blog was one of the first blogs I ever followed, and we are practically neighbors (they live in Richmond, VA).  This book is very affordable and I got it here for $17.00.

Sherry has a marvelous sense of humor and both of their personalities come through when they write. It is like you are sitting next to them having a candid conversation. They are very fun people! They met in NYC as marketing professionals and after moving to Richmond she was the first to blog full time, then he followed years later. Now this is their life as their family grew to three, with darling Clara.

I love watching them transform their first house back in 2007 and now their second house in 2010.  The entire book is about their darling story, their launch as bloggers, but most of all, all their Do-It-Yourself projects! 243 projects to be exact!  They are madmen (and women) about DIYing. From their kitchen transformation, to tons of ideas on how to make art personal for your home, this is THE book for  first time homeowners wanting to learn how to improvise and turn thrift store and inexpensive purchases into something CUSTOM and PERSONAL for your home.   It is especially perfect for those new to DIYing who need the breakdown in cost, time and effort to get a glimpse of what is involved.

As for this old lady, most likely their mom's age, I got a few ideas, but Ive been doing this stuff for 30 years so it really didn't help me with the DIY topic too much, but I loved reading their story and how they write.

heavy lightness

If you tuned in for yesterday's post, the item we posted about is actually a fresnel lens used in lighthouses. Thanks to Paul who informed us of the technical term!!


Switching gears a bit - by now you may have gathered that I like moody interiors.  One that gives you a visceral reaction or makes you feel a certain way.  In that vein, a movement that I migrate to is heavy lightness - a pairing of dark and heavy with light and airy   Since that is a contradiction in and of itself, it takes a lot of thought and fantastic execution to pull it off.


Michael Penney seems to have mastered the concept.

Following intuition and concepts rooted in nature, he grounds his room with dark furniture or rugs and flooring.  But he's also good at grounding a room through the use of dark wall colors and wall decor.

We are so thankful, humbled and honored to have 100 followers  in our less -than-a-year blog venture.  Forging new friendships, launching a design business, unleashing DIY skills and teaming together as mother and daughter have given us both a new lease on an already creative life.

I began my art career early on, attending James Madison University and majoring in Fine Art.  After a few years teaching high school art and juggling a studio at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA, my art was picked up by a national design firm and marketed throughout the U.S.  Interior design became an easy transition from my art and I soon joined the firm as a Director of Interior Design for 12 years.  I've continued my love for art and interiors today, launching a small design firm, Powell Brower Home, with my daughter in 2011 and producing children's murals,  new artwork and working on a children's book about my pony, Thomas.

This 18" x 24" serigraph entitled "Discovery" was produced in 1977 and spawned 4 other small prints in the series.

# 10 - My Crafty Home Life

So since Mom is super inspired by her Spring Into Action Challenge, I've been starting a new to-do list and sometimes these things can seem so daunting, right?  I figured I should start small and work up to larger ticket items (like hanging three new pendant lights in my kitchen or all new dining chairs).  One thing I can get done relatively quickly is a hardware refresh ('scuse the techy talk) on my Bombe chest in my entry.  I bought it a couple of years ago when I was fully on board with the rustic meets untreated or reclaimed wood look and now I'm left feeling too shabby and not so chic about it.

 

I bought four of these pups ponies to add to it..

 

I'm thinking of painting it dark green, navy or black with some contrasting trim.  A la...

I love some brass hardware!  I feel like it's one of those things that you either love or hate.  While I've been busy falling in love with brass all over again, Mom cringes at the thought of its revival after finally finishing the update to stainless/brushed nickel about five years ago.  Same disconnect between us about wallpaper, too.

Brass looks super good in a campaign-style enviro.  Or to add a touch of warmth to a space.
