Happy Fall

It's officially fall and I'm officially on board.

I am continually inspired by the colors in nature and all around me.
When we were at Bethany Beach Delaware last weekend, even the ocean, the light, the atmosphere seems to have changed since summer.

This photo on a gray, windy day led me to dream about blue, olive and tan color schemes.

Then I dreamed of river stones and pebbles as new color schemes:
These would be a lovely addition to a neutral room.
What colors are you thinking about lately?

WS Home, have you seen it?

Yellow has always been one of my favorite colors, but I haven't decorated with it much. I love this Williams Sonoma "New Traditional" collection of neutrals with pops of intense yellow. Their Spring 2013 publication I received in the mail is a sight to behold-beautifully photographed.

Since painting my laundry room BM's Gunmetal, I am in love with this shade of gray. It really goes with more than you think, and is the perfect backdrop for neutrals with lots of color. (That's why art museums use it!)

If yellow is not your color, you can easily get the same look with a brilliant emerald or clear saturated orange or even a fuchsia; the more saturated the better. I did a post on saturated colors a while back and it certainly applies to the accent color possibilities here.

Remember my BRAGG concept? Every room needs a touch of Black, Rugs, Art, Greenery and Glass (or mirror). That's what makes a successful room. Check it out in your space!

Williams Sonoma's Rustic Modern and Beach Chic rooms are sure to please as well.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

color schemin'

I love a good off-beat color scheme - when something isn't exactly what you've come to expect.

I would have never thought I would gravitate towards black and red. But maybe if it looked like this!

If you told me you were doing your dining room in yellow and orange, I'd secretly think 'good luck with that, Sunshine'  But it just gels here!

Preconceived notions tell me I don't think I would ever want to dwell in a turquoise and red room.  But I might if it looked like this.

And when I think of purple and green, I think of a teenage bedroom.  But this is far from immature!

I put a lot of thought into what colors I don't see together all the time when it came time to redo my bedroom.  I went with a  purpley-brown-gray called 'Smoked Oyster' and coral.  I wanted to rest my eyes on something that I don't see in the pretties everyday.

Do you have any color schemes that you love?  Do you like slightly off beat ones or the standard variety?

Achromatic what?

You've heard of MONOCHROMATIC rooms, using only one color like this:

and you've heard of COMPLEMENTARY color schemes, where the colors are opposite of one another on a color wheel:

But have you heard of ACHROMATIC   color schemes?  These are schemes that only use black and white.  This look is growing in popularity lately. I'm guessing it stems from the origins of an all white room where some dark contrast is added to warm it up.

My new fav is black and white and gold which further breaks up the starkness and adds warmth.  Simulated gold is also shown in natural elements like baskets and wood tones.

I'm seeing this trend more and more. Erika at Small Shop did a piece on achromatic dining rooms...Do you see this trend infusing into todays room designs?  Are you using it yet?
