Now you KNOW I love decorating, but I also have to be true to myself and take to my artistic roots and get a dose of real, genuine, historical art from time to time! I might lose some of you for a bit, and I know Bethany is not as enthralled with art museums as I am, so bear with me.
I have had the pleasure of discovering this jewel of an art museum when my son lived in Richmond this past year. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art is such a beautifully lit and open space, both modern and traditional, with a beautiful outdoor water feature and garden.
A little history.....
The Virginia Museum of Fine Art was built in 1936 during the Great Depression as an act of faith in the future and in the value of art. The English Renaissance building was designed by Norfolk architects
Peebles and Ferguson and was the Commonwealth's flagship museum and began with a collection of 50 paintings donated by Judge John Payne. There were additions to the space in 1954,1970 and 1976 to house the growing collections and endowments. The museum houses one of the world's largest Indian and Himalayan Art Collections, as well as collections of English Silver, Art Nouveau and Art Deco furnishings, glass and jewelry and an extensive Impressionist and Post Impressionist collection. There is ample Modern and Contemporary art, which is among a favorite of mine.
