Cowhide Cleaning

1
We love cow hide rugs and both Bethany and I have them in our homes.  What we didn't know is how to clean them.  Recently we steam cleaned our carpets with my Bissel Pro Heat steam machine just using some oxyclean in hot water.  It works great on wall to wall carpet and on our area rugs, so we gave it a try.  It worked wonders!

We shampoo our horses, so why not a cowhide?
This left the hide shiny, pleasantly fresh and clean. We air dried it in the sun outdoors for several hours. BTW these rugs are the most durable and forgiving rug out there- you can't hurt them, and they're great with kids, spills and animals.
Here is one layered in Bethany's living room.

Hope this helps clean your hide!

  1. Well now here's something I never heard of. And I have a hide in my family room so this is great info. I also want to know about the oxi clean on the carpets. Do you just use the oxi clean you add to the washing machine?

  4. Thank you for the cleaning info. I have two, one layered over my sisal in the living room and a small one upstairs in my sitting room. So far vacuuming keeps them gorgeous but you never know when you're headed for a spill or spot. I am saving your advice.

  5. Thanks for the tips! We don't have a cowhide, but we do have carpet, and it's amazing what a difference cleaning the carpet makes!

  7. You are so right, cowhides are easy and forgiving. I hadn't thought of using my bissel on them, I have just used mild soap and water and of course the vacuum!

  11. Cowhide is such a beautiful fabric, and makes such a visually stunning rug. They do need to be treated carefully when cleaned. I was told by a friend that you can steam clean them but I was afraid to do so. In the end I got in the local rug cleaning company and they did a great job for me.
