Year of the Horse

Year of the horse?  More like life of the horse around here!  I got my love of horses from Mom, who had a Shetland pony, 'Surprise', growing up and later, a Thoroughbred cross named 'Beaucoup' during college.  I started riding when I was seven and we've had horses ever since. I rode and showed horses all through my younger years and I feel like it was the best way to grow up. I was always down at the barn instead of out on the streets.   It taught me a heck of alot of responsibility very early on and I also attribute many of my communication skills to the nonverbal bond that came through riding and training horses.

We're blessed to live smack dab between horse country and the nation's capitol so we see beautiful equestrian facilities and estates in our travels and often see interiors steeped in the same tradition.  We've frequently dreamed up and tried out our own versions of equestrian decor over the years, always trying to incorporate our deep love for the equine spirit in some way.

Do you have any horsey accents in your home?  Do tell!

PS - Our friend Robin at Happily Home After just posted her TV area situation and she has like ALL of our tips implemented (on her own, btw), check her out!

  4. I love this bit of history about your equestrian pursuits, Bethany! We live in horse country also and my parents grew up on farms. I have always loved them and wish one of my kids rode. Love the board you created and the pup on the chair! :)

  5. Love the mood board Bethany! Nothing horse-related in my home YET, but back in the Philippines, my dad is a huge fan and the home I grew up in has 6 glass-etched horses on a divider between the stairs and living room, it is gorgeous!

  7. Great board, Bethany. I have vintage fox hunt wallpaper in one of my closets, an old horseshoe on the wall in said closet and little vintage iron horse statute--'Lil Sassy--who lives in there too.

  9. Since my oldest started riding lessons, more and more horses appear around the house but they are all of the plastic variety. It would be a nice collection to start for her to gather some nicer horse items. Any excuse to shop. :)

  11. I wondered when this post was coming. I would love to own a horse, never mind I've only ridden twice. We looked at a house with neighborhood stables. I thought it a magnificent idea.
