The dreaded TV wall

Recently we had a client ask us how to mask decorate around her massive flatscreen TV.  We see this dilemma so beautifully tackled almost daily on shelter blogs so we instantly had a lot of ideas swirling in our little brains.  One of the ways people cleverly decorate around their TVs is with a gallery wall of fun frames placed all around the TV.

We've come up with some additional tips to minimize the importance of the ever-present TV on the wall.

1 - Add a collection to your media space.  This helps redirect the focus to the items you've taken the time to amass and display. Collections can also hang on the walls - such as a grouping of ethnic baskets along the sides of TV.

2 - Customize the hardware in the space. Special details catch the eye.

3 - Don't be afraid to add a seating area in front of the TV.  Two chairs nestled on either side of the TV promote talking versus watching. Or at least the illusion of talking vs watching!

4 - Ambient light can do wonders to a space and make it look functional.  Plus you can use it to read in your new seating area.

5 - Last but not least, artwork is always a good idea.  Framing the TV, putting a random pattern, or just a two-noter at the top can help make the area look decorated instead of an afterthought.

6 - If your husband isn't a component junkie,  you could go sans entertainment center!  Mount the TV on the wall amidst other framed works of art or prints and voila - it's hidden.

What other great ideas have you seen for disguising the TV?  I just love the idea of building it its own little box and putting it away when not in use.  Or hanging a piece of art over it!

  2. Great ideas Bethany! I especially like the addition of the chairs, with a swivel feature, they can even be used for watching TV when the conversation is at a lul!

  3. That area is so hard!! We mounted our tv in a corner instead of centered in the room and it does downplay it a little.

  4. love these tips! I don't even have a tv mounted on the wall (the hubs doesn't even like to put a nail in the wall much less a tv!) but one day I will :) I don't have any tips but I do have a whole pinterest board on this topic and am adding this to it! http://www.pinterest.com/southernnancy/tv-tv-on-the-wall/

  5. Ugh the TV wall. Always a pickle. I love having bookshelves around ours because when the hubs is watching something boring then I can just stare at all my pretty things. :)

  7. Personally I just let it be myself - they are so thin and innocuous these days it doesn't bother me really. However we do a lot of those lifts here at the office where a piece of art drops from the ceiling and rests on front of the tv. Knowing me though I'd just leave the art 'up' in the ceiling 99% of the time! ha

  10. My hubby thought I was silly switching the knobs on our TV credenza for a pair with flair from Anthro and adding flanking (but not matching) chairs on either side of the same. He thought no one would ever sit there, but that's the space guests always choose! Also have incorporated most of the other tips you talked about; I should post about my corner now that I've seen experts agree with what I've done. And can I just say, I've yet to be in a household that doesn't have an occupant component junkie :)
