While I have been a long time lover of blue and white porcelain, I have loved the white cutout china called "blanc de chine" ever since seeing the matching lamps of my best friend's mother when I was a young girl. I never have forgotten those lamps, which were very popular in the 1950's, when many of our fathers brought them back from the far east while serving in the war.

Blanc de Chine also applies to white china of this period - like this exquisite vintage dragon:

West Elm has introduced a metal cutout lantern that vaguely reminded me of the look.
A bit more versatile than blue and white, Blanc de China porcelain can add a 'collected' layer to any decor. Do you have any? I want more (like that little girl on the State Farm commercial).
I don't have any, but I love the look of it.
ReplyDeleteLove the look and am seeing the "cutout" in so many things right now!! Hope y'all had a wonderful Memorial Day!! xo
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful. There is one I love at my favorite antique store that lights up on the inside as well as at the top.
ReplyDeleteMC carried two home from Japan in the 1960's! I believe our daughter has them now! I loved them....They also had a bulb that lit the interior.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty!! The West Elm don't do it for me like the originals, though!
ReplyDeleteI love that commercial :) Thank you for introducing me to a new term….I didn't know that's what the white cutout was called. So pretty…..I love those lamps.
ReplyDeleteI have two Blanc de China porcelain vintage lamps and I love them....one is in perfect condition and the other has a crack in it and I still use it....Mine look older than the 50s but not sure how old they are....
ReplyDeleteI do! But Nancy I had no idea it was called Blanc de China. Thanks for the education. I adore the look. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm crazy for Blanc de Chine. I like it best when it's not displayed in front of white -- it stands out better. I'm not sure it's more versatile than blue and white, but it's lovely -- I have lamps in the dining room and pieces in my bookcases.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lesson! They are beautiful pieces.
ReplyDeleteI wish! They are truly gorgeous Nancy and so versatile, even if your not into chinoiserrie (which I am), it will still look great in any room. Thank you too for the info, I didn;t even know what' it was called until today. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't but I love the look!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Nancy I love the lamps!!

Nancy, I love blanc de chine. It is so beautiful and chic. I recently found a pair of the largest blanc de chine lamps I've ever seen at an estate sale. I snatched them up so fast! Id love for you to visit my blog houseofpemberley.blogspot.com.
ReplyDeleteThose lamps are exquisite. I love blanc de chine, but unfortunately I don't have any... and I think our house needs some. :)
