color schemin'

I love a good off-beat color scheme - when something isn't exactly what you've come to expect.

I would have never thought I would gravitate towards black and red. But maybe if it looked like this!

If you told me you were doing your dining room in yellow and orange, I'd secretly think 'good luck with that, Sunshine'  But it just gels here!

Preconceived notions tell me I don't think I would ever want to dwell in a turquoise and red room.  But I might if it looked like this.

And when I think of purple and green, I think of a teenage bedroom.  But this is far from immature!

I put a lot of thought into what colors I don't see together all the time when it came time to redo my bedroom.  I went with a  purpley-brown-gray called 'Smoked Oyster' and coral.  I wanted to rest my eyes on something that I don't see in the pretties everyday.

Do you have any color schemes that you love?  Do you like slightly off beat ones or the standard variety?

  1. I understand wanting an unusual, "un-trendy" color. I just do what I like since I have to live with it. I have chocolate brown dining room and a Chinese red library and its not exactly "au courant" but who cares.

  2. I really like that black, red and white room. Usually I think this combo looks quite harsh but it is done to perfection there!

  3. I think it also matters how it's done, cause the combos you showed here are simply gorgeous. For my house I went with mostly black and white, greys and pops of color like mint of fuchsia.. I have to live with it so I have to like it!! And I do!!
Love the black and red and the green and purple!!

  4. I love that snippet of your bedroom….the coral is so cheerful and it's gorgeous paired with that ceiling color! My sister in law's decorator has used color schemes I would NEVER imagine would work…..when she would show me paint colors I'd be like REALLY???? and then it would all come together so beautifully. The best thing about her house is that it's different from everyone else's….it has personality….thanks to the colors that bring it to life.

  9. I think the reason why your examples are perfect Bethany is because the unexpected color (like red in the turquoise room) comes in small doses but with an awesome punch! I haven't dared into that territory yet of extreme color combos but this post is a great inspiration for that!

  12. I love experimenting with different color schemes and also the unexpected combinations which work beautifully which one discovers occasionally. These are quite stunning examples. It all depends on the shades and the intensities of the colors.
