If you tuned in for yesterday's post, the item we posted about is actually a fresnel lens used in lighthouses. Thanks to Paul who informed us of the technical term!!
Switching gears a bit - by now you may have gathered that I like moody interiors. One that gives you a visceral reaction or makes you feel a certain way. In that vein, a movement that I migrate to is heavy lightness - a pairing of dark and heavy with light and airy Since that is a contradiction in and of itself, it takes a lot of thought and fantastic execution to pull it off.
Michael Penney seems to have mastered the concept.
Following intuition and concepts rooted in nature, he grounds his room with dark furniture or rugs and flooring. But he's also good at grounding a room through the use of dark wall colors and wall decor.

I love that dining room with the dark walls and white table. But then I've got a thing for blue. And congrats to the winner.

I was going to say fresnel lens! darn it :)
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm a fan of heavy lightness too. I dig these interiors.
Great photos to analyze, Bethany! The last one is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful examples. Love that blue velvet couch you can barely see in the second pic.
ReplyDeleteWell, I didn't know the term "heavy lightness" ... but I am using it now because it is exactly the look I love!!
ReplyDeleteI love the contrast! The heavy pieces ground the space without making it feel too heavy!
ReplyDeleteI can always embrace the darkness... delish.
ReplyDeleteI love high contrast, always looks great! Hope you have a wonderful week, Nancy! xx
ReplyDeleteI love interiors with a good contrast! The dining room and the last picture are my faves!

Yippee!! I won, I won, I won!!!! I want #2 emailing you now :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you! I love these interiors, now I have a name for the style I adore.
ReplyDeleteI'm crazy about the pillows in that second photo; memo to self: must layer wider rectangle in front of square pillow on an armed chair!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful contrasts in these rooms...adore the first image!!
ReplyDeleteI love these pics. Such great texture in all of them!!
ReplyDeleteThis is my absolute favorite of design concepts!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the 'moody' interiors, though for me that usually translates as dark. I wouldn't have thought it achievable with white walls until this post. The last image of the book room is really lovely - seems to exemplify the light and dark look you're talking about. It's got me thinking... (for which thank you).
